Fresh air can be so revitalizing, yes, even more so in the winter months! Here our lovely work placement student Abigail Sparks shares how our PSS Walking Group will encourage you to embrace the cold and put your best foot forward.
The PSS Walking Group is a great way to get some gentle exercise, practise mindfulness and socialise whilst out in nature. Our members expressed, on our recent walk around Speke Hall gardens, that walking is a relaxing activity that benefits their mental health and wellbeing.
During the winter months, it can be easy to let daily exercise slip. This may be because of loss of motivation. In winter, low levels of ambient light along with the shorter days reduces our exposure to vitamin D. From this, it can cause us to feel tired or fatigued, impacting our mood.
Many of us can struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), commonly occurring in winter. This is due to the reduced sunlight in winter that can disrupt the body’s internal clock and lead to feelings of depression. Taking a walk in winter can be a great way to alleviate your symptoms and improve mood and energy.
Joining us on our winter walks can have great benefits for your body, mental health and wellbeing.
Going out for that tranquil walk in winter can improve your immune system as the cold weather increases blood circulation and white blood cell production, which helps your body fight infections. It also keeps your heart healthy!
Walking in winter also has great therapeutic benefits. If you are struggling with your mental health during the winter, walking can release endorphins that can improve your mood and relieve stress. On your walk, you can practice mindfulness and interact with nature. Take in the crisp air, the serene landscapes and quiet stillness of the season.
During our walking groups, you can practice mindfulness by taking a slow, deliberate walk, paying attention to the crunch of leaves underfoot, the sound of the birds, and the chill in the air. Notice how your body feels with each step.
Members of our walking group mentioned on our walk around Speke Hall, that it is a great way to feel connected to others. They shared that they feel trust is built on these walks and they feel comfortable to talk about things on their mind. Joining us on our walks can give you a sense of community and support from others.
Did you know that cooler temperatures boost your brain?
Its true! Walking in colder temperatures can help people think more clearly. If you are struggling to focus, getting outside for a walk can be an essential part of your day to improve focus.
Considering all these benefits of walking in winter, why not think about coming along to our next group walk.
Please note that this activity is only open to people who access support from the PSS Wellbeing Centres. If you are interested in joining the group, please get in contact with Sylvie.
